“Your Power” is the latest single from American singer, songwriter and musician Billie Eilish and her second studio album “Happier Than Ever”, which is due to be released through Darkroom Records and Interscope Records on the 30th July 2021. As with all of Eilish’s songs, the track was written by her and her brother Finneas O’Connell, who also produces all of Billie’s songs.
“Your Power” sees Billie with a more acoustic and folk sound, warning of the tales of a past romantic relationship that was abusive. Many fans have stated that they believe the song is about Eilish’s ex-boyfriend rapper Q (aka 7:AMP) who she was with when she was 16. The song reflects on how mentally tired Billie was by the relationship, and analysing the forms of manipulation and control. In an Instagram post about the song’s release, Eilish captioned it with the following:
“‘Your Power’ song and video out now. this is one of my favourite songs i’ve ever written. i feel very vulnerable putting this one out because i hold it so close to my heart. this is about many different situations that we’ve all either witnessed or experienced. i hope this can inspire change. try not to abuse your power.”
Also speaking to Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1 on the day of the track’s release, Eilish spoke about the track’s intent in a bit more detail:
“It’s really a big subject. It’s about a lot of different things. It’s sadly very relatable for people. I’m not gonna make it about my experiences because it’s really hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of thousands and millions of people have experienced this every single day. It’s everywhere you look and I hate it and I wanted to say something and I’m not gonna get too deep into the specific lyrics and what they mean and what they’re really about but it’s a problem that’s occurring everywhere you look. And everyone is someone or knows someone who’s been taken advantage of.”
In the self -directed video uploaded to YouTube on the 29th April 2021, EIiish is shown sitting on the side of a mountain, and later has an anaconda wrap itself around Eilish, perhaps signifying a suffocating relationship – the same one discussed in “Your Power”. In only 24 hours, the song has received over 12.3 million views and almost 1.9 million likes on Eilish’s YouTube channel.
