“Happier Than Ever” is the fifteenth track from American singer, songwriter and musician Billie Eilish and her second second studio album of the same name, which was released through Darkroom and Interscope Records on the 30th July 2021.
“Happier Than Ever” sees Eilish turn to a more pop-punk sound, with focus on the building of atmosphere, emotions and anger throughout the track. The song is ultimately a break-up track, seeing Billie Eilish defeatedly admit that she is happier without her ex-partner than with them. Eilish has spoken about the track several times in various different situations. Speaking in her February 2021 documentary about the track, Eilish had this to say initially:
“The whole song is just more like nothing even specific that they did, you’re just not happy being with them. Can’t even explain it.”
Eilish had also revealed what colours she related to the song on her Instagram story, stating it was “tan/crazy black”, as well as also breaking down the song for Spotify:
““Happier Than Ever,” probably the most therapeutic song I’ve ever written or recorded, like ever, ever, ever ‘cause I just screamed my lungs out and could barely talk afterwards, which was very satisfying to me somehow. I had wanted to get those screams out for a very long time and it was very nice to.”
The music video for “Happier Than Ever” was released on the 30th July 2021 via Eilish‘s official YouTube channel. The self-directed video sees the singer in a glamorous room, walking back and forth while she sings the track into a vintage telephone. The lights begin to flicker halfway through the video as the tempo and sound changes and Eilish’s vocals become more angry, and water floods the house, which the singer escapes while she sings the song the roof while it rains. As of the 20th August 2021, the video had received over 33.6 million views and over 1.8 million likes.
