“Now That We Don’t Talk (Taylor’s Version) (From The Vault)” is the nineteenth track from Taylor Swift’s re-recorded 2014 album “1989”, which was released in October 2023 on “1989 (Taylor’s Version)”.
The synth-pop song sees Swift state her contempt for an estranged lover, whom many think may be referencing singer Harry Styles, whom Swift briefly dated. Many believe the track is aimed at Styles as Swift makes references to him changing his image to match different eras of his career: “you grew your hair long / you got new icons”, as well as referencing them previously going on holiday on a yacht with other celebrities such as Richard Branson: “…or that I’d like to be on mega yacht / With important men who think important thoughts”.
The song was supposed to be part of original album’s release in 2014, but was only released in 2023. Via Swift’s Tumblr, she revealed why the track didn’t make the cut:
“‘Now That We Don’t Talk’ is one of my favorite songs that was left behind, it was so hard to leave it behind, but I think we wrote it a little bit towards the end of the process and we couldn’t get the production right at the time. But we had tons of time to perfect the production this time and figure out what we wanted this song to sound like. I think it’s the shortest song I’ve ever had, but I think it packs a punch, I think it really goes in. For the short amount of time we have, I think it makes its point.”
The audio video on YouTube had over 11.1 million views as of the 27th January 2024.
