“Slut! (Taylor’s Version) (From The Vault)” is the seventeenth track from Taylor Swift’s fourth re-recorded album “1989 (Taylor’s Version)”, which was released on the 26th October 2023 through Republic Records. It is part of an ongoing catalog of re-recorded albums from Swift, after her 2019 dispute regarding the masters of her back catalog under Big Machine Records.
The synth-pop “Slut!” is new track on the recorded album, as it was left out of the original “1989” album released back in 2014. The track makes fun of Swift’s romantic life always being a main topic in mainstream media, as well as tabloids portraying Swift as a serial dater. Swift in the early 2000s was often made fun and slut-shamed due to her dating often and quickly, which inspired this track.
Via a post on Swift’s official Tumblr, she revealed in a voice recording why she didn’t choose “Slut! (Taylor’s Version)” to be on the original recording of “1989”:
“The song “Slut!” is a song we wrote for 1989 and in it, I kind of cheekly play on the discussions at that time of my life around my dating life. And that’s not the only time on 1989 that I’d done that, I’ve done that on “Blank Space” and when I came down to having to pick songs for the album, I think I thought, “Okay, well, I’m going to choose ‘Blank Space’” and, unfortunately, had to make some tough decisions in terms of what to put on the track list […]. I’m so happy it’s finally going to be something you guys hear, because I have always been proud of it, I’ve always wanted it to come out into the world and now it is, so yay!”
