“Sweet Nothing” is the twelfth track from Taylor Swift’s tenth studio album “Midnights”, which was released through Republic Records on the 21st October 2022.
“Sweet Nothing” was written by Swift along with William Bowery – a pseudonym that her partner Joe Alwyn uses when writing with Swift – as well as production done by Swift and producer, songwriter and artist Jack Antonoff. This is not the first time that Alwyn has written with Swift, with the name William Bowery also being on the songwriting credits for multiple songs: “exile”, “betty”, “champagne problems”, “coney island” and “evermore”.
The dream pop song details the beauty, safety and peacefulness of a romantic relationship – in this case Swift and Alwyn’s. It emphasises the quietness of togetherness, the softness in silence when it feels as if the whole world outside is chaotic and loud. The first verse references Wicklow – an Irish county where Alwyn filmed the Hulu show “Conversations With Friends”.
The lyric video was uploaded to YouTube on the 22nd October 2022, via Swift’s official channel. As of the 22nd November 2022, the video had a total of 3.4 million views.
