“Enchanted” is the ninth track on American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift and her third studio album “Speak Now”, which was released on the 25th October 2010 through Big Machine Records. In July 2023, Taylor Swift released a re-recorded version of the album “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)” through Republic Records.
The country pop song describes the feelings after an encounter with a persn Swift believed would become very special to her. The theme of a fairytale is very apparent throughout the song, with magical adjectives being scattered throughout the song. Swift can’t stop thinking about this person, hoping that they were thinking about her too.
It has been speculated that the song is about Owl City band member Adam Young, who Swift would correspond with over email for quite some time, before eventually meeting him in New York City. Swift spoke to MTV about the song, but never named Young as her inspiration for the track, however her comment made it fairly obvious he was the subject of “Enchanted”:
“I started writing that in the hotel room when I got back, because it was just this positive, wistful feeling of ‘I hope you understand just how much I loved meeting you.’ Using the word ‘wonderstruck’ [in the lyrics] was done on purpose, because that’s a word which that person used one time in an e-mail … so I purposely wrote it in the song, so he would know…”
Young eventually responded to some of the claims about “Enchanted” on the Owl City website in February 2013, stating that he too, was infauted by Swift after they met for the first time. He ended up uploading his cover of “Enchanted”, to directly address Swift, such as “Taylor I was so in love with you” and “I was never in love with someone else”. Swift never responded to Young’s cover of the song.
The audio video for “Enchanted” was uploaded to Swift’s official YouTube channel on the 24th July 2018. As of the 20th June 2023, it had 101.3 million views.
“Enchanted” is certified Gold in the US, Silver in the UK and Platinum in Australia.
