“Not My Responsibility” is the ninth track on Billie Eilish‘s second studio album “Happier Than Ever“, which was released via Darkroom and Interscope Records.
Originally released on Eilish‘s YouTube as a short film on the 27th May 2020, “Not My Responsibility” is a spoken word piece that sees Eilish critiquing how the media and public had body shamed her and women, as well as the negative opinions people had about her clothing choices. Eilish spoke to Spotify about the piece:
““Not My Responsibility,” these are some of my favorite words that I’ve ever written and I feel like nobody listened. It’s about body image and all the things we are trained to think about bodies and it just makes me laugh because I put it out and everyone was like “Yes, queen! Body positivity!” And then like three months later there’s a picture of me in a tank top and the whole internet was like “fat!”“
The short film features Eilish wearing a black jacket in a dinly lit room, gradually underessing until Eilish stands in a black bra, ending the video by submerging herself in a tar like substance.
Speaking to GQ about her clothing choices and the video’s goal:
“Sometimes I dress like a boy. Sometimes I dress like a swaggy girl. And sometimes I feel trapped by this persona that I have created, because sometimes I think people view me not as a woman. That tour video was about all that. It is me saying: look, there is a body underneath these clothes and you don’t get to see it. Isn’t that a shame? But my body is mine and yours is yours. Our own bodies are kind of the only real things which are truly ours. I get to see it and get to show it when I want to.“
Directed and made by Eilish, the video had received over 34.5 million views and over 2.7 million likes as of the 21st August 2021.
