“boyfriend” is the latest track from pop princess Ariana Grande and American pop duo Social House (Charles Anderson & Michael Foster). Billboard’s Jason Lipshutz said that the track was: “…a lovably low-stakes ode to romantic attraction but resistance to traditional labels”.
Social House and Grande have previously worked together, mainly with Social House helping produce many of Grande’s tracks, such as “thank u, next”, “goodnight n go” and “7 rings”. Grande spoke up about the meaning of the track on Twitter when replying to a fan: “well, i feel like this song captures a common theme in the lives of so many people i know ! people want to feel love but don’t want to define their relationship & have trouble fully committing or trusting or allowing themselves to fully love someone. even tho they want to.” In another tweet, Grande also discussed the track: “We wanted to make something uplifting that captures that feeling of being afraid to take the leap [and] trust, being afraid of being hurt or feeling like you won’t be enough for that person, but also how it feels to have a crippling crush on someone.” “boyfriend” is the first song by a woman, and third overall, to top the Rolling Stone Top 100 in its debut week. The track was also nominated “Song of The Summer”
The music video was released alongside with the track on the 2nd August 2019. The video was directed by Hannah Lux Davis, who has previously directed many of Grande’s music videos in the past such as “thank u, next”. It features Grande chasing after Michael Foster and imagining scenarios in her head about how she will defeat the other women talking to Foster. The music video visually narrates how both Foster and Grande like each other, but don’t want a relationship, ending up with the two kissing in a bathroom and breaking everything in sight. Only a few weeks after its upload, the video has almost 57 million views.
