the boy is mine

Ariana Grande

Album eternal sunshine

“the boy is mine” is the eighth track from Ariana Grande’s seventh studio album “eternal sunshine” which was released on the 8th March 2024 through Republic Records.

The R&B-pop track takes it’s title from the 90s R&B hit “The Boy Is Mine” from Brandy and Monica. The song sees Grande play a womaniser – the role that the media expects her to play. A leaked version of an unreleased Grande song titled “fantasize” went viral in 2023, and caused fans to ask Grande for R&B tracks.

Speaking to Amazon Music, Grande referenced “fantasize” and “the boy is mine”:

“That’s gonna be everyone’s favorite, unfortunately. I think it’s naughty, it’s the version of ‘Fantasize’ that they wanted to have. It’s like a sexier, naughtier one, and I think it’s more provocative than the rest, but it’s not about what you think it was about and it’s also a song that I’ve always wanted to interpolate […] Just the title [is an interpolation]. I’m such a 90s baby, I have so many 90s interpolation ideas, samples, in my brain but this one finally found a home. I wanted it to come after ‘true story’ on the tracklist because that song plainly says, ‘I’ll play the bad girl if you need me to.'”

The lyric video for the track was released on the 8th March 2024 on Grande’s YouTube channel.
