This song is about the actor Jake Gyllenhaal. Taylor and Jake met in the winter time in New York, and dated for 3 months then on and off for a month or so. In an interview with ABC Cynthia McFadden, Taylor explained the story behind this song, she said:”I was in the recording studio and this guy walks in that was a friend of my ex’s and starts talking about how he’s heard we were getting back together and that was not the case,” Swift said. ”When he leaves, Max and Johan, the writers, are like, ‘So what’s the story behind that?’ And so I started telling them the story of break up, get back together, break up, get back together, just, ugh, the worst”. Max Martin says, ‘This is what we’re writing; we’re writing this song,’” continued Swift. “And I picked up the guitar and just started singing ‘we are never.’ It just happened so fast. It was so much fun.”

This song broke all sorts of records to Taylor.
