Doja Cat had previously admitted her desire to work with The Weeknd on “Planet Her”. and initially showed him a song that she thought was “the perfect song”, however it ended up “not working”. After Doja Cat played The Weeknd the original solo version of “You Right”, she stated that he became “obsessed” with the song and replaced one of the solo verses with The Weeknd’s own. In the extended version of the song, Doja Cat’s original second verse made its way back into the song. Speaking to E! News online, Doja Cat expressed her response to The Weeknd wanting to be a part of “You Right”:
“…he was obsessed with it and that’s kind of all I wanted was a very good reaction […] It’s a beautiful, beautiful song.”
