Juicy

Doja Cat

Album Amala

“Juicy” was originally released as a solo track featuring only Doja Cat (real name Amala Zandile Dlamini) from the deluxe edition of her 2018 album: “Amala”, which was released in 2019. The remix of the track features American rapper Tyga.

“Juicy” is a track about body positivity and loving your body. In an interview with Genius.com, Doja spoke to the website about “Juicy” and its history:

Genius: Who inspired this song?

Doja Cat: I like butts and I think about butts and I felt like making a butt song. Because I made a booby song, so I was like, “All right, let me just make a butt song.” It’s body parts. I have no other body parts. I have kneecaps and that’s…yeah, I’ve tried everything.

G: How did the song come about?

DC: Me and Yeti were in the studio and I did the keys. I started with the synth and then he arpeggiated it, finished the rest of the beat and killed it. I literally just did the synth and I left and I either fell asleep or something. He just took it away. I trust him with stuff like that, he’s really talented. That’s kind of how that came about.

G: How did Tyga end up on the remix?

DC: With the remix that we did with Tyga, that came about pretty naturally and really fast, actually. He’s one of the fastest writers I know. Because I sent him the beat of the song with an open verse. Same day, he sent it right back and killed it. It was amazing.

G: What was the songwriting process like?

DC: It may have been an all day sort of thing. Sometimes I do songs pretty fast but this one was like, we knocked out both the verses in one day. And the hook and everything. It was just really fun because there’s a lot of sort-of bubbly, goofy, silly parts lyrically that happened. I was just relaying it back to my friend and she was like, “Yeah, do that. Blah, blah, blah.” It just ended up being, what I like to believe, a masterpiece.

The music video was released alongside the track on the 15th August 2019. Directed by James Bergert, it features. Doja Cat dancing and using fruits to depict her body, with colourful backgrounds and fruit themed costumes. Tyga appears for his verse in the video, surrounded by lemons. As of January 2020, the video has over 73.5 million views and over 1.1 million likes.
