“She” is the eighth track from English singer-songwriter Harry Styles and his second studio album “Fine Line”, which was released in 2019 through Erskine and Columbia Records.
“She” is a slow rock ballad that eventually builds up towards the end of the song. the 6 minute and 2 second song takes listeners on a journey both lyrically and sonically. The song’s meaning has never been clarified by Styles, therefore leading fans and listeners to speculate the song’s meaning: is the protagonist imagining being with another woman? Or is the protagonist talking about the complexities and layers of gender? It could be both of those themes, as the song could be discussing both. Gender is an intricate and personal journey, and the toxic masculinity men face today is never-ending, and Styles does a wonderful job of discussing it in the track.
Styles spoke to the Rolling Stone in 2019, and revealed that he and his fellow writers were under the influence of psychedelics – mushrooms, to be exact:
“Mitch played that guitar when he was a little, ah, influenced. Well, he was on mushrooms, we all were. We had no idea what we were doing. We forgot all about that track, then went back later and loved it […] When I’ve been doing the track listing, and ticking off the ones to definitely make the album, it’s always in the first three to be ticked. That’s a phenomenal song.”
The official audio video for the song was uploaded to Styles’ YouTube channel on the 13th December 2019. As of the 17th October 2022, the video had a total of 37.5 million views.
“She” is certified Gold in the U.S.
