“jealousy, jealousy” is the ninth track from Olivia Rodrigo’s debut studio album “SOUR”, which was released last Friday on the 21st March 2021 through Geffen Records. “jealousy, jealousy” was written by Rodrigo, Nigro and Casy Smith, with Nigro producing the song with Jam City.
“jealousy, jealousy” sees Rodrigo talk about the unrealistic standards that society expects of young people and young femme presenting people. Rodrigo opens up about her own insecurities, as well as trying to understand why she feels this way and tries to remember that what other women have, does not mean she has nothing. Speaking to Nylon magazine, Rodrigo admitted that “jealousy, jealousy” was the first song she wrote for the “SOUR” album:
“[“jealousy, jealousy”] was one of the first songs that I wrote on the record with this wonderful writer named Casey Smith. In this time period, I was super obsessed with social media. I would look for things that would hurt my feelings all the time and compare myself to everyone. I felt like my life was only what I showed to others. I didn’t feel like my life was any deeper than my Instagram feed. That’s a really troubling mindset to be in as a teenager. And so I guess I wanted to write a song about that. It isn’t sad or “Oh, I don’t feel like I’m enough,” it’s “Oh, God, I’m so jealous.” It’s tongue-in-cheek, and a little funny to me. But the sonics on the song are the reason why we put it on the record. There’s this piano in the bridge that’s so convoluted and almost atonal. Sometimes it just doesn’t go with the music and it’s so chaotic.”
The official audio video for “jealousy, jealousy” was uploaded to Rodrigo’s YouTube on the 21st May 2021. In less than one week, the video had received well over 3 million views and almost 200 thousand likes.
