“all-american bitch” is the opening track from Olivia Rodrigo’s second album “GUTS”, which was released on the 8th September 2023 through Geffen Records.
The pop-punk is incredibly witty and wonderfully satirical, detailing Rodrigo’s emotions of dealing with the double standards of being a modern woman. Not only does she list off all the traits women are expected to have and that she does have, her tone emphasises fake gratitude for having these traits. She screams towards the end of the song, followed by the lyrics “i’m grateful all the time”, further reiterating that despite all the societal expectations set on women, they are also expected to be grateful for all they receive and how they are received when following society’s ideas of what it means to be a woman.
The title of the song was inspired by American writer Joan Didion and her book “The White Album”. Rodrigo spoke more about Didion’s book and the inspiration for the “GUTS” album as a whole:
“[…] one of my favorite songs on the record is called ‘All-American Bitch.’ I thought that was such a fun title. I was reading—have you ever read The White Album by Joan Didion? She has so many fucking great quotes. I was reading this bit about her going to San Francisco to meet all these hippies […]. She was talking to some hippie who ran away from home and he called his mom an all-American bitch. And I was like, ‘That’s the fucking coolest phrase I’ve ever heard,’ so I had to write a song about it.”
The lyric video for the track was uploaded to Rodrigo’s official YouTube channel on the 8th September 2023.
