hope ur ok

Olivia Rodrigo

Album SOUR

“hope ur ok” is the final track on Olivia Rodrigo’s debut album “SOUR”, wich was released on the 21st May 2021 through Geffen Records. “hope ur okay” was written by Rodrigo and Dan Nigro, with Nigro producing the song.

“hope ur ok” sees Rodrigo remembering a person from her past and how they were mistreated, and hopes that they are okay now. Writing in the SOUR Diary “Journal / Zine”, Rodrigo breaks down the song:

“Hope ur ok is the last song on the record. It’s a super special song to me & I love the stories it tells. I wrote most of it in my living room in early 2020, drawing inspiration from some of my favorite country & folk artists. I think my favorite lines I’ve ever written are ‘hope he took his bad deal & made a royal flush’ & ‘hope you know how proud I am you were created with the courage to unlearn all of their hatred.’ I had so much fun making it & I hope it gives optimism to someone out there just like it did for me.”

Rodrigo also spoke to MET107 about the song and how much was actually Rodrigo’s own experiences and memories:

“I think all of my songs are just my personal life but with a little bit of imagination, because if I wrote my personal life verbatim people would be like, “That’s boring” … One of the songs on the record, it’s called “hope ur ok,” is written from the perspective of my friends. I don’t actually know some of the people that I talk about in the song. But there are stories [in it] that I had accumulated from different friends, so stuff like that I do all the time.”

The audio video was uploaded to Rodrigo’s YouTube channel on the 21st May 2021, and in less than one week, the video has over 2 million views and over 185 thousand likes.
