According to Olivia Rodrigo, “honeybee” was the first love song she wrote for “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love”. She wanted to write a song that celebrated being in love while still containing “some element of sadness or fear or melancholy,” explaining that her favourite love songs balance happiness with emotional vulnerability.

Speaking about the writing process, Rodrigo said:

“This was, I think, the first love song that I wrote for the album… It was basically my adventure into trying to write a song that was a ‘love song’ but it also had some element of sadness or fear or melancholy.”

She also described writing the song as a particularly rewarding experience, saying she felt genuinely happy for several days after finishing it, something she noted “doesn’t always happen” when writing songs. During the GUTS World Tour in Milan in July 2025, she wore an encore shirt featuring a bee graphic, which fans later connected to the track. In April 2026, she also teased fans by commenting on TikTok that there was “a song about an insect” she was especially excited for people to hear.
