“good 4 u” is the third single from American singer, songwriter and actress Olivia Rodrigo’s upcoming debut album “Sour”, which is due to be released this Friday, 21st May 2021. The pop-punk song sees listeners hear a new side to Rodrigo, with “good 4 u” being much more upbeat than her previous releases (“drivers license” and “ de ja vu”). “good 4 u” was written by Rodrigo and Dan Nigro, with Nigro producing the song with Alexander 23.
“good 4 u” is filled with sarcasm, with Rodrigo noting how fast her former lover has moved on, as well as into a new relationship. This is most likely in reference to Rodrigo’s ex partner Joshua Bassett, who began dating singer Sabrina Carpenter after the end of his and Rodrigo’s relationship. “good 4 u” sonically draws inspiration from artists like Avril Lavigne and bands like Paramore, for a distinctly mid 2000’s nostalgic sound.
The music video was released on the 14th May 2021 via Rodrigo’s YouTube channel. Directed by Petra Collins, the video makes references to female protagonists in horror films such as “Jennifer’s Body” (2009) and “Audition” (1999), with Rodrigo playing the role of a high school cheerleader who ends up buying gasoline and burning her ex-boyfriend’s house and then emerging herself in a lake. In less than 5 days, the video has received over 25.6 million views and over 1.6 million likes.
