“As It Was” is the debut single from British singer-songwriter Harry Styles (released 1st April 2022) and his upcoming third studio album titled “Harry’s House”, which is due to be released on the 20th May 2022.
“As It Was” sees Styles reminisce about the past, discussing loneliness and solitude, as well as coming to terms with the fact that things will never be the same as they were: “You know it’s not the same as it was”. The song opens up with Style’s goddaughter saying: ” “Come on Harry, we wanna say goodnight to you.” Sonically, “As It Was” sees Styles turn in a new direction, changing from his rock-n-roll sound to a new-wave and indie inspired sound.
Speaking on Hits Radio about the song, Styles revealed that it was the last song written for the album:
“It was written in my friend’s front room in England’s country side. It started off much slower, as it was being written, it was a lot slower, the kind of piano line was being played on piano and it kind of turned into a synth, and it just kind of took on a new life. But I’m a fan of it, it’s one of my favourite songs on the album, so I hope people are liking it.”
The music video was directed by Ukrainian music video director Tanu Muino and was released alongside the single on the 1st April 2022. The. video shows Styles in a red sequinned getup, on a spinning disc while he chases a woman, as well as dancing and jumping around the city of London. The video also seems to be a visual metaphor for the constant change of life – and that being the only sure and certain thing in life. In only 2 days, the video had over 28.2 million views.
