“7 Rings” is the newest record from pop princess Ariana Grande, and shows listeners a new side of her in this upbeat trap style track. This is a new sound from Grande, and is part of her upcoming album: “thank u, next”, which is due to be released later this year.
“7 Rings” was first teased in her music video “thank u, next” on the license plate of a car. When asked on Twitter about the background to the song, Grande replied to a fan saying: “well …………. ’twas a pretty rough day in nyc. my friends took me to tiffany’s. we had too much champagne. i bought us all rings. it was very insane and funny. & on the way back to the [studio] njomza was like ‘bitch, this gotta be a song lol’. so we wrote it that afternoon.” A fan tweeted Grande asking if the song as supposed to be about female empowerment. Grande responded: “indeeeed. but i guess thank u, next is more vulnerable and gentle lol. seven rings is jus like ….. a flex. friendship anthem. how the homies WANT u to feel. what the ‘thank u next’ energy evolves into while embracing a new chapter (even tho both moods /energies are v present).” The track does feature a rap verse from Grande talking about her wealth and the positives that have come with it, like how she bought 6 of her friends rings from Tiffany’s jewellery store, some of whom are credited in the song writing credits. The verses follow the same tune as The Sound of Music’s “My Favourite Things”, as well as the bridge interpolating Notorious B.I.G’s “Gimme the Loot”.
The music video was uploaded to YouTube on 18th January 2019, and has almost 54 million views as of late January 2019. It consists of Grande and all her friends dancing in a large pink house, all dancing outside and inside the mansion, drinking champagne. It was directed by Hannah Luxe Davis.
