“The Way” is a track by pop singer Ariana Grande and rapper Mac Miller. Both of the artists have had coverage on Story of Song – Grande with her latest album “Sweetener” and Miller with his recent tragic death and his last record, “Swimming”.
“The Way” is the first duet from the pop singer and the rapper, featuring on Grande’s 2013 album “Yours Truly”. The first verse starts with Miller saying that he’s thinking about her “every second, every hour”, and that he’s “picking petals off of flowers like / do she love me, do she love me not?”. Miller is admitting that he’s thinking about this girl all the time (assuming it’s Grande in this scenario). Grande then sings saying that he gives her something that she wants “all the time, need it every day”. In the pre-hook and hook sung by only Grande, she tells Miller how she’ll never leave him, “and I ain’t going nowhere cause you’re a keeper”, and further solidifies this in the hook: “You got my heart, don’t know how you did it”, and “I love the way you make me feel”, which is where the name of the song originates from. Grande goes onto to sing about how her heart goes crazy when he is nearby, then the hook once more, but the alteration of “Be your lover, your friend, you’ll find it all in me” rather than “you can get whatever you need from me”. Mac Miller’s verse sings about how different Grande can be when not in public: “You’re a princess to the public, but a freak when it’s time”, and essentially just urges Grande to come and move closer to him, and to always contact him when she feels lonely or when he “sneaks in your mind”.
The music video features both Grande and Miller in a studio like setting, singing to each other with a projection of each other behind them. They are also surrounded by balloons, and occasionally the camera will pan to Grande lying down on a bed with her phone next to her. Towards the end of the video, Miller and Grande kiss. The video has over 350 million views since its release in 2013.
