“The Birthday Party” is the fifth single from English pop rock band The 1975 and their upcoming fourth studio album, “Notes on a Conditional Form”, which is due to be released this Friday on the 22nd May 2020.
“The Birthday Party” is a country-pop track written by all members of the 1975, with production done by Healy and Daniel. The track does not follow a traditional structure of a song, but rather a stream of consciousness, with Healy discussing his journey to sobriety, and some personal anecdotes from his life.
The music video was released on the same day as the song on the 19th February 2020, and was uploaded to YouTube. Directed by Ben Ditto with artwork created by animation artist Jon Emmony, the video features a digital (but highly realistic) version of Healy, being admitted into a digital detox centre called the “Mindshower Retreat”. Afterwards, Healy enters a digital world filled with nature, as well as reference to popular culture. As of late May 2020, the video has 2.2 million views with 104 thousand likes.
