Spring Day

Album You Never Walk Alone

“Spring Day” was the lead single from South Korean band BTS and their 2017 album “You Never Walk Alone”, which was a repackage of their second studio album “Wings”. “Spring Day” is an alternative hip-hop track written by “Hitman” Bang, Pdogg, RM, Suga, Adora, Arlissa Ruppert and Peter Ibsen, with Pdogg in charge of production.

“Spring Day” and its main melody was created by band member RM, who wrote it between November and December 2016 while taking a walk in Saetgang Eco Park in Yeouido, and watching the dried leaves fall off trees. The group have not publicly stated the meaning or story behind the song, leaving it up to listener’s interpretation. Lyrically, the song discusses the absence of a friend, and using seasons and spring as a metaphor for how things will improve and move forward.

The music video for “Spring Day” was uploaded to YouTube via Big Hit Labels on the 12th February 2017. Directed by YongSeok Choi, the video was apparently inspired by Ursula K. Le Guin’s novella “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” (1973) and Bong Joon-ho’s 2013 movie “Snowpiercer”. The video shows BTS inside various rooms, from laundry rooms, abandoned trains and a motel, they remain inside for most of the song, with different rooms and doors leading into different locations. The whole of BTS come together at the end of the film, in a beautiful landscape that represents the most idealistic version of a spring day. As of December 2020, the video has 367.1 million views and almost 7 million likes.
