DNA

“DNA” is one of South Korean boy band BTS most popular songs and was the lead single from the band’s fifth EP “Love Yourself: Her”, released from Big Hit Entertainment. A Japanese version of the song was released on the 6th December 2017 through Universal Music Japan. The track was written by Pdogg, “Hitman: Bang, KASS, Supreme Boi, Suga and RM, with production done by Pdogg.

“DNA” is an upbeat pop song with EDM influence, featuring a variety of various sounds, such as whistling, acoustic guitar and bells. According to songwriter and lead vocalist RM, the track revolves around “the expression of a young, passionate love”, using metaphors and themes of genetics, fate and love at first sight, using the term “DNA” to describe how love and attraction towards one person can feel like DNA; as if the love is genetically coded.

The music video for “DNA” was uploaded to YouTube in September 2017 and was directed by YongSeok Choi. The video features the band performing a dance choreography in front of a CGI screen showing the universe, bright coloured planets and bright settings with blue skies. As of mid-October 2020, the video has 1.1 billion views with well-over 16 million likes.

Chart Rankings, Certifications, Accolades and Awards Won: In its year of release, “DNA” charted at #99 in Australia, #47 in Canada, #76 in France, #10 in Finland, #5 and #1in Japan, #6 in Malaysia, #2 in New Zealand, #8 and #1 on various charts in the Philippines; #63 in Scotland, #92 in Slovakia, #2 and #1 on various charts in South Korea; #2 in Sweden, #12 and #90 on different charts in the UK, #12 in Uruguay and #67 and #1 on differing US Billboard charts. “DNA” is certified Gold in Australia and the US, as well as 2x Platinum in Japan (for the Japanese version of the song). In 2017, Billboard included the song on its “100 best songs of 2017”, as well as listing BTS as one of the greatest boy bands of all time. In 2017, “DNA” won “Best Music Video” at the Melon Music Awards; “Best Song That Makes You Smile” award at the 13th Radio Disney Music Awards in 2018, and a total of three awards at the 2018 Annual Soompi Awards: “Song of the Year”, “Fuse Video of the Year” and “Best Choreography”.
