“champagne problems” is the second track on Taylor Swift’s latest album “evermore”. Written by Taylor Swift and William Bowery (who has now been revealed to be her partner, Joe Alwyn, who was simply using a pseudonym), with production done by Swift and Dessner.
“champagne problems” tells the tale of a woman who declines her would-be fiancé’s marriage proposal right before Christmas, alluding to issues and struggles of mental illness. In a personal essay about “evermore”, Swift stated that the track was about “longtime college sweethearts [who] had very different plans for the same night, one to end it and one who brought a ring.”
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Dessner revealed when he discovered that Swift’s partner Joe Alwyn was William Bowery on many song credits: “I guess I can say now that I’ve sort of known all along — I was just being careful. Although we never really explicitly talked about it. But I do think it’s been really special to see a number of songs on these albums that they wrote together. William plays the piano on “Evermore,” actually. We recorded that remotely. That was really important to me and to them, to do that, because he also wrote the piano part of “Exile,” but on the record, it’s me playing it because we couldn’t record him easily. But this time, we could. I just think it’s an important and special part of the story.”
