‘Bad Blood’ is about the tension between Taylor Swift and another female artist who tried to sabotage Swift’s entire arena tour, in an interview with Rolling Stone Swift said: “She did something so horrible, I was like, ‘Oh, we’re just straight-up enemies.’ And it wasn’t even about a guy! It had to do with business. She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me. And I’m surprisingly non-confrontational ‘ you would not believe how much I hate conflict. So now I have to avoid her. It’s awkward, and I don’t like it.” Taylor did not reveal who that female artist is, but the media started speculating that it was Katy Perry. She added: “Sometimes the lines in a song are lines you wish you could text-message somebody in real life. I would just be constantly writing all these zingers ‘ like, ‘Burn. That would really get her.’ And I know people are going to obsess over who it’s about, because they think they have all my relationships mapped out. But there’s a reason there are not any overt call-outs in that song. My intent was not to create some gossip-fest. I wanted people to apply it to a situation where they felt betrayed in their own lives.'”
When Swift talked about the meaning of the song and how the media perceived the disclosed person this song is about, she said: “That was about losing a friend… But then people cryptically tweet about what you meant. I never said anything that would point a finger in the specific direction of one specific person, and I can sleep at night knowing that. I knew the song would be assigned to a person, and the easiest mark was someone who I didn’t want to be labeled with this song. It was not a song about heartbreak. It was about the loss of friendship.”
In an interview for On Air with Ryan Seacrest, Taylor talked about when she first wrote this song, and played it to Ed Sheeran who immediately loved it so much and wanted it to be the first song to be released from her album ‘1989’. She said: “At that point, it was just a really basic demo track, and he was going, ‘This has to be the first single! This has to be the first single!’ And I was like, ‘Eh, we’ll see.’ But since he’s now heard the album and heard the final track, he loves it even more. It’s so cool to have friends who are so supportive. I feel so lucky. And he does have a really good ear.”
