“American Girls” is a song by Harry Styles, released in 2026 as the second single from his fourth studio album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally. The song was written by Styles alongside Kid Harpoon and Tyler Johnson, who also produced the track.
According to interviews given during the album’s release campaign, Styles said the song was inspired by watching several close friends get married, which led him to reflect on relationships and the idea of settling down himself. In an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, he described the song as emotionally “quite lonely” beneath its upbeat production.
Musically, “American Girls” marked a continuation of the more retro-inspired sound Styles explored throughout the album. Critics described the track as influenced by 1980s music, particularly Italo disco and house, while several reviews compared its style to artists such as The 1975, James Blake and David Bowie.
The song was recorded at several studios, including Hansa Studios in Berlin, Abbey Road Studios, RAK Studios in London, and Ridgemont Studio. Drummer Tom Skinner, known for his work with The Smile, performed drums on the track.
Upon release, “American Girls” received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics. Some praised its production and melodic structure, while others criticised the simplicity of its chorus. DIY described the song as “warm and infectious,” while other reviews questioned whether it stood out among the album’s stronger tracks.
The music video for “American Girls,” directed by James Mackel, was released alongside the album. The video features Styles performing action-film style stunts on a movie set before revealing that much of the action is being carried out by a stunt double. Fans interpreted the visual as reflecting themes of performance, fame and emotional distance.
Commercially, the song debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart and also topped the Billboard Global 200 chart. It became Styles’ fourth UK number-one single as a solo artist.
