“Take My Breath” is the first single from Canadian rapper and singer The Weeknd and his upcoming fifth studio album “The Dawn“. “Take My Breath” sees The Weeknd take a new turn sonically, drawing from disco and synth-wave sounds and melodies.
The Weeknd first teased “The Dawn” in September 2020, where he stated that:
“I might have another album ready to go by the time this quarantine is over”.
Later at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards in May, The Weeknd referenced the new album in his acceptance speech:
“I just want to say the “After Hours” are done and “The Dawn” is coming”.
The song’s themes follow The Weeknd‘s usual storylines of love, heartbreak, deception and drugs and partying. In “Take My Breath”, we see Tesfaye draw on these stories and ideas to create a track that discusses a lover who tempts Tesfaye into a life he does not want.
The music video was released alongside the single on the 6th August 2021 via The Weeknd‘s YouTube channel. Directed by Cliqua, the video shows The Weeknd dancing in an underground night club, using oxygen masks to take a drug of some kind. The Weeknd encounters a woman who he dances with, but then ultimately almost ends his life by wrapping her hair around his neck. On the 12th August 2021, the video had almost 19 million views and over 750 thousand likes. Please note, this video features heavy strobe lighting and flashing lights.
