“Rain On Me” is the second single from iconic American singer Lady Gaga featuring pop artist and her sixth studio album “Chromatica”, which is due to be released this Friday, the 29th May 2020. The song is a mix of electro-pop, disco and house.
Written by Grande, Gaga, Nija Charles, Rami Yacoub, Michael Tucker (BloodPop), Alexander Ridha and Matthew Burns (Burns), and BloodPop and Burns producing the song, “Rain On Me” is a song about carrying on through life despite life’s hardships, using rain as a metaphor. Gaga expressed the meaning of the song to Vulture: “This is about an analog of tears being the rain. And you know what it’s also a metaphor for, is the amount of drinking that I was doing to numb myself. I’d rather be dry.”. On the 21st May, a day before “Rain On Me” was released, Gaga spoke Zane Lowe from Apple Music’s Beats 1 about the songwriting process of the track, as well as working with Grande: “[Grande] was so wonderful and I think that maybe she assumed that she was gonna come in and I would be like ‘here, just sing this and thank you so much for your time’ right. But instead I asked her what she needed, how she wanted to do things.” She added that “when she came to the studio I was still crying, she came up to me and said, ‘You’re gonna be alright, call me, here’s my number’, and she was very persistent, she tried being friends with me so many times. But I was very ashamed, I didn’t want to project all that negativity onto her. Then she came up to me and said ‘you’re hiding’, and I said ‘yeah, you’re right, I’m absolutely hiding’, and that’s where our friendship blossomed.” Gaga also explained the meaning behind some of the lyrics of the song, saying: “It’s also a metaphor for tears and for the amount of alcohol I was taking to numb myself. I’d rather be dry but at least I’m alive, rain on me.” The song has been heavily praised by music critics – particularly the vocals of both Gaga and Grande.
The music video was released on the same day as the song and was uploaded to Lady Gaga’s YouTube channel. Directed by filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, the video opens up with Gaga with a knife in her thigh, with rain and daggers falling from the sky. Both Gaga and Grande are singing in separate arenas with backup dancers, dressed in space/futuristic style attire. At the end of the video, both Gaga and Grande dance together. In only 5 days, the video has managed to receive almost 53 million views, with almost 3 million likes.
