Sheeran wrote this song as a soundtrack for The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug, on the request of Director Peter Jackson and his co-producer wife Fran Walsh, it was their daughter’s suggestion.
The song has lilting, Celtic-influence to it, in an interview with Jam Music, Sheeran explained how it happened, he said: “The first idea I had for this song was something epic, but it seemed like, when I watched the film, my heart was pumping so much. It’s so intense; I felt I needed a way to ease people out of the theatres. I was allowed complete freedom to create what I thought was fitting for the film, which is very rare, and Peter, Fran and Philippa (Boyens, screenwriter) were always on hand to give notes and pointers. The entire team down in New Zealand was out of this world.” Sheeran watched the movie, wrote the song, and recorded most of it in one day. In an interview with MTV News, he explained trying to get into the mindset to write this song, he said: “I’ve never been a dwarf, but I’ve wrote a song from the perspective of being a dwarf. Peter said, ‘Focus on the last ten minutes. That’s what the song needs to reflect.’ ‘Write a song that takes the audience by the hand and leads them from Middle Earth back into reality.’ So, yeah, I tried to do that.” Director Peter Jackson asked him to focus on the last 10 minutes of the movie.

This Song, Lyrics and Music, has reached into my soul since I first heard it. I can not believe how talented Ed Sheeran is. I have been a fan of his for so long, There are a few of his songs that I believe do not get the recognition that they deserve, i.e. “Supermarket Flowers, Photograph”. They just reach into your soul and like “I see Fire”.
The song “Perfect” was my Son’s Wedding song. My favorite version is with Ed and Andrea B.
