“Eyes Closed” is the lead single from British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran and his upcoming fifth studio album titled “Subtract”. Released on the 24th March 2023 through Asylum and Atlantic Records, the track was also featured in the trailer for “Ed Sheeran” The Sum of It All”, a soon-to-be-released Disney+ documentary on the private aspects of Sheeran’s life.
The folk pop song sees Sheeran pay tribute to the late Jamal Edwards, a music entrepreneur who sadly passed away in February 2022 from a drug overdose. Throughout the track, Sheeran describes the emotions he’s dealt with while dealing with grief, and how he keeps seeing him despite him no longer being here. Sheeran took to TikTok to speak about the track:
“This song is about losing someone, feeling like every time you go out I expect to just bump into them, and everything just reminds me of them and the things you did together […] Blue was Jamals colour, but now is all I feel. And I guess music helps heal, so I’m dancing with my eyes closed to try get through it…”
The lyric video for the song was released on the 26th March 2023 on Ed Sheeran’s official YouTube channel. As of the 30th March 2023, the video had a total of 533 thousand views.
