In this song, The Weeknd feels this connection with a girl who’s been traumatized by a bad relationship. He’s reassuring her that she can trust him and that she can relax, feel comfortable with him, with reference to sex too.
When Zane Lowe asked The Weeknd about the collaboration with Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo of Daft Punk and how the song came about, he said: “So I came in, we went to Paris. I came into the session and Thomas and Guy-Manuel had already started a track, which was ‘I Feel It Coming,’ which was just the music. And it was one of the tracks that they were playing for me and I was freestyling over it, trying to find a vibe with it. You know, Guy-Manuel and Thomas were kind of directing me on how to make it because they want it to sound as authentic as possible.”
It was quite an experience for The Weeknd to write the song with Daft Punk, in an interview the Wall Street Journal he said: “Their studio is like a spaceship; there’s a lot of gear, but the way they make music, the way they explain it, is very cinematic. It’s like they’re reading a page out of a novel: ‘We want to make sure that at the end, it feels like the sun’s coming up, and maybe there’s a car chase.’ They can get technical, but it was interesting how they visualise making music.”
