Doin’ Time

The fifth track from slow love ballad musician Lana Del Rey’s highly anticipated album (“Norman Fucking Rockwell!”) is “Doin’ Time”, a cover of American band Sublime’s 1996 song of the same title.

John Janick, the CEO of Del Rey’s label Interscope Records, explained the artist’s choice for covering the track and making it a feature of her latest album. “…(the label) was involved in executive-producing the documentary… and Lana was talking about how big a fan she was… she felt like it fit in the aesthetic [of the album]”. Despite “Doin’ Time” being a cover of Sublime’s track, Sublime actually created the track from the opera “Porgy & Bess”, where the original song was called “Summertime”.

The official music video was released on the 29th August 2019, in order to promote the NFR! Aalbum, which was due to be released the next day. Directed by Rich Lee, the video is fairly simple, featuring Del Rey as a giant in a huge beachside city, zoning out to show it is a film at a drive-in. The video cuts to Del Rey on a date, where she finds her date kissing another woman in a car. The video ends with the giant Del Rey character killing Del Rey’s date by leaving the screen and picking up the car the date was in. As of September 2019, the video has almost 15 million views.
