“Margaret” is the thirteenth track from Lana Del Rey’s 2023 album “Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd” . It was written by Del Rey and Antonoff, who features on the song with his band Bleachers.
“Margaret” is about Antonoff’s wife (then-fiancée) Margaret Qualley, an actress, dancer and model. Del Rey narrates how Antonoff and Qualley first met. The lyrics “when you know, you know”, references when two people know they’re destined to be together when they first meet. Del Rey originally got the inspiration for the love ballad after hearing how Antonoff and Qualley first met and hearing Antonoff play the tune on the piano.
In an interview for Interview Magazine in February 2023, Billie Eilish asked Del Rey about “Margaret”:
“September 2022 was the very last song I wrote. It’s a song called ‘Margaret,’ about Jack Antonoff’s fiancée [Margaret Qualley].
“I was like, ‘You know what? I want to write a song for him.’ It lands right in the middle of the album. It’s funny, this album felt totally effortless. When I did “Norman Fucking Rockwell!”it was about world-building, whereas this was straight vibing.”
“Margaret” went viral on TikTok in mid 2024.
