Bad Habits

“Bad Habits” marks English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran first solo release in over 4 years, and was released on the 25th June 2021 through Asylum Records. The dance-pop track was written and produced by Sheeran, Johnny McDaid and Fred Gibson. ”

“Bad Habits” sees Sheeran turn in a new direction sonically, with the track more upbeat and more dance-pop than his previous albums and songs. Speaking to Apple Music DJ Zane Lowe, Sheeran revealed the full story behind the song’s lyrics and new sound:

“…I’d never really written dance music properly. I’ve never really like gone put my head to it and let’s make it… And then when we finished it, I was like, ‘This is actually quite good. Played it to my manager. He was like, ‘Let’s make this more…’ Because it was really like techno, so we kind of brought it into a space where… What I loved about it is Fred’s [Gibson, producer] approach to the vocals. It’s barely a whisper. No, Fred’s approach is basically just a whisper on the mic. He just said like, you have this massive bass-y chugging and you have this tiny vocal that you make huge.”

Lyrically, the song sees Sheeran reminisce on past bad habits of intense drinking, partying and general lack of care, as well as Sheeran’s good intentions never lasting when he turns to alcohol. Speaking to Zach Sang, Sheeran revealed that “Bad Habits” ultimately stems from his desire to be fully present as a new father in his children’s life, and no longer be turned by alcohol and partying.

The music video for “Bad Habits” was released on the 25th June 2021, and was directed by infamous director Dave Meyers. The music video shows Sheeran as a destructive vampire in London, causing terror among the public (whom are all animated) with some friends. The video ends when the sun rises, where we see Sheeran return back to human form, playing his guitar on a rooftop. As of early July 2021, the video has over 48.7 million views and over 1.3 million likes.
