“Prisoner” is the latest release from American singer and songwriter Miley Cyrus and her upcoming seventh studio album “Plastic Hearts”, which is due to be released on the 28th November 2020. The song features singer Dua Lipa, and was written by both Cyrus and Lipa, along with Andrew Wotman, Jordan K. Johnson, Marcus Lomax, Michael Pollack, Stefan Johnson, Ali Tamposi and Jonathan Bellion. The production was done by Andrew Watt and The Monsters & Strangerz.
“Prisoner” is a disco-punk, disco-rock song that interpolates Olive Newton-John’s 80’s hit “Physical” in the chorus. In May of 2020, both Lipa and Cyrus had decided to scrap their current collaboration and create something completely unique. In an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Cyrus spoke about working with Lipa:
“For her and I, there’s just no competition. That changes just everything. There’s a true partnership. Then I also liked that it wasn’t the first song we’d cut together. We actually cut other songs. She wanted to keep going until it was right, until we found the one that honors our individuality. […] We just waited until we felt like, ‘Now this is Dua-Miley song. You can just, everything about it reflects us.’ I mean, there’s even something to me, like how I talk about like fashion being a way to flip yourself inside out. The colors that I see, when I listen to a song, I see colors. Some people’s charisma is really overwhelming. I see, when Dua’s around, that her charisma, there’s no sense of desperation to it, like, ‘I’ve got to be the best because if I’m not what if…’ There’s a calmness to her success, which I really like. Because I feel like when you can tell someone is too much of a… or a survivalist. That I don’t like.”
Cyrus also spoke about the song’s lyrics in the Apple Music interview, stating: “I mean, in a way… I feel too, I mean, we’re just trapped in our emotions right now. I mean, really me, there’s no escaping it. It’s like, ‘Locked up, can’t get you off my mind.’ Anything that you’ve tried to suppress or compartmentalize at that point, it’s coming up. It’s yours to own, to own it or release it.”
The music video for “Prisoner” was uploaded to Miley Cyrus’ YouTube channel on the 19th November 2020. Directed by Cyrus and Alana O’Herlihy, the video takes inspiration from various films such as “Thelma & Louise” and “The Runaways”, showing Lipa and Cyrus arriving at a dive bar and then performing while they dance with one another. In less than a week, the video has received 14.5 million views and over 850 thousand likes.
