‘Malibu’ is about Miley’s relationship with co-star on ‘The Last Song’ film and fiancé Liam Hemsworth whom she got re-engaged to in 2016. She penned the song while taking an Uber on her first day to a taping of The Voice, she said: “I drive myself everywhere, but that day I decided to Uber. I was trying not to sing out loud because someone else was in the car.”
In an interview with Carson Daily on 97.1 AMP Cyrus talked about how deep the lyrics are and that they’re just about her life with Hemsworth, she said: “It’s definitely about love. If that’s how it is, that’s what it is, but it’s saying ‘you brought me here and I’m happy that you did,’ Next, ‘cuz now I’m as free as birds catchin’ the wind.’ Because now, I’m not locked in the Hollywood grid where I can’t escape everyone. We had a drone in my freakin’ backyard one time because people didn’t want to give me any privacy and I can’t live like that, and now, I’ve found this freedom of being able to say I think people respect my privacy more because I’ve created boundaries.
The title refers to the city of Malibu in California, but Miley also describes it as “finding a new love with an old” During the announcement of this song at a May 2017 cover story for Billboard magazine, Cyrus pointed out that she had been sober for three weeks which had a good impact on the song. In an interview with Elvis Duran and the Morning Show, Cyrus talked about the story of the song, she said: “It can so easily be generalized into a love song. I had to really heal myself individually, and then this song about finding a new love with an old love, maybe you’re finding a new freedom is also about individuality and the freedom in that. And realizing that certain doors lead you to one place you never imagined you would be, and if that can be through a person, that’s really awesome.”
