Jesy Nielson from Little Mix explained the meaning behind the song to Artist Direct: “Wings’ is literally about not letting anyone put you down. It’s about believing in yourself. Haters are going to hate. You have to believe in yourself and who you are. That’s what ‘Wings’ is about. It’s a strong message for our fans. We love it, and we think it’s quite uplifting.” In another interview with Attitude, she added: “It’s a feel-good song. We want people to feel something when they listen to it. But we didn’t want to be too cheesy with the ‘Believe in yourself’ thing. There’s nothing wrong with writing songs about clubs and parties, but I think it’s cool to do a song that means something.””

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) certified it Gold for sales over 526.717 copies. The song also topped the Scotland Official Charts, Japan Hot Overseas, and the charts in Ireland. In Australia, it peaked at number 3 and was certified Triple Platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA). In the US, ‘Wings’ entered the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at number 79; the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified it Gold for over half a million copies.
