Prophet

“Prophet” is the seventh track from gay pop icon King Princess (Mikaela Straus) and her first debut album “Cheap Queen” which is due to be released on the 25th October 2019.

“Prophet” is the star’s second single to be released from the debut album, and takes a different tone to other KP songs, that often tend to discuss queer love and relationships as well as heartbreak. In a behind the scenes video on the “Prophet” music video on KP’s official YouTube channel, the musician talks about the story behind the track. “Prophet is about being inundated with masculine energy”, KP says in the video. “…And only being able to focus on one person through all of that. It’s about being commodified, it’s about being bought and sold. It’s about being a corporate product.”

The music video was released on the 7th August 2019, and was directed by Cody Critcheloe with the creative direction being run by Clare Gillen, who is a frequent collaborator of King Princess. Critcheloe talks about the music video in the behind the scenes video, explaining how he met KP and the themes and meanings around the music video. “So, I met King Princess last year at LadyLand – we played this festival together and we hit it off, we got along. I thought she was cool and I liked her music… And I suggested that we do something. So, this is how it happened.” “One thing I got really excited about was the football field”, Critcheloe states. “I just thought it would look so great if she was a football player… Kinda aloof in this hyper-masculine setting. We went from that to construction workers, then she (KP) really wanted to do something in a restaurant. The part that I really love is the cake eating scene, when Mikaela is a giant cake – she (Mikaela) really wanted to have a love interest in it… so we kinda turned it into that wasn’t like, as cheery and saccharine. Something a little more vicious. A love interest that kinda turns on you – and that’s what her love interest does. She serves Mikaela to all these wretched business men.” As of October 2019, the video has over 1.5 million views.
