It’s about someone trying to move on from a relationship and establishing new rules with herself to keep herself from falling back into that failed relationship. Lipa worked on this track for 3 years, which led her to write and record other songs, until she reached a considerable amount of songs to choose from for her album. When Lipa was asked about ‘New Rules’ she explained that it’s quite different to a lot of tracks on the album, she said: “I wanted it to feel very new. It’s the breakup song that I wish I had when I was breaking up with someone. It’s about keeping your distance from someone who’s bad for you. I’m setting some rules down so [that I] won’t go back to that person.” Lipa worked with director Henry Scholfield on the video for ‘New Rules’ she invited him for a cup of tea in London to discuss ideas she had for the clip such as including a group of flamingos into the clip, because she considered them a good representation of female friendship Lipa also showed Scholfield a picture of model Naomi Campbell holding another woman in her back during a campaign in the 1980s as a “reference point”, she said: “I loved the idea of girls looking after each other like that, holding each other, that sense of humility, that sense of strength.” Inspiration from the flamingos’ movements was taken while planning the choreography and only eight women were selected for the video out of more than 200 women who auditioned.
