Released on the 3rd October 2025, “Father Figure” is the fourth track from Taylor Swift and her album “The Life of a Showgirl”. Sampling the infamous track of the same name from iconic English singer-songwriter George Michael, “Father Figure” is a pop track that has made Swifties determine that it could possibly have two meanings.
The first meaning could refer to Swift’s early career and her tumultuous business relationship with American record executive Scott Borchetta and former talent manager Scooter Braun (who previously owned Swift’s master recordings), poking fun at being the money maker in the business relationship. Others have suggested it could be alluding to the alleged feud between Swift and Olivia Rodrigo over songwriting credits.
While the original song from George Michael is about intimacy, growing together and protection, Swift’s interpretation shows her seeking revenge and thinking about past betrayals. Speaking on BBC Radio 1, Swift spoke about the creation of the track as well as the resurgence of Michael’s version due to the popular 2024 film “Babygirl”:
“Yeah, that was a fun one to write. And and we love a song with a key change. We had we had written it before then [The babygirl movie]. We had actually written it before then, but it was kind of I thought it was kind of fun. Like a fun coincidence, because it’s a very different way of using the idea of a father figure to kind of talk about power power structures and the flipping of the power dynamics.”
“Father Figure” is certified in the following countries:
- Gold in Australia and New Zealand
- Silver in the United Kingdom
- Platinum in Canada
