“Ruin The Friendship” is the sixth song from Taylor Swift’s twelfth studio album, “The Life of a Showgirl”. Released in October 2025 via Republic Records, the country pop track is an emotional tale about a love that never happened between friends.
“Ruin the Friendship” tells a touching story about Taylor Swift looking back on a high-school friendship with a boy she secretly loved but never told he meant more to her, often regretting not taking a chance on a kiss even though he had a girlfriend.
As the song unfolds she recalls later learning—from her longtime friend Abigail—that he died, prompting her to fly home for his funeral with so much left unsaid, and whispering at his grave that she “should’ve kissed you anyway.” The core of the track is Swift stating that it’s better to risk “ruining the friendship” by being honest about your feelings than to live with lifelong regret for the things you never dared to do.
