“willow” is the lead single from Taylor Swift’s second surprise album of the year “evermore”, which was released on 11th December 2020. The song was written by Swift with producer Aaron Dessner. Similar to the “folklore” album, “evermore” and its tracks are all of the indie and indie-folk genre.
“willow” received positive reviews from many critics and was praised for being the best track (in terms of lyrical content). “willow” uses a willow tree and its growth to describe life and its events. According to American Songwriter, Swift stated that “willow” is “about intrigue, desire, and the complexity that goes into wanting someone. I think it sounds like casting a spell to make someone fall in love with you.”
The music video for “willow” was directed by Swift and was released via Swift’s YouTube channel alongside the song on the 11th December 2020. The video continues on from the storyline shown in the “cardigan” music video. Swift follows a golden string behind her piano where she is able to travel into another reality, being shown her and a love interest meeting as kids, but then being unable to reach him as an adult later due to first being trapped in a glass box. Swift followed strict guidelines on set and insured everyone was wearing masks and social distancing when possible on set. In less than one week, the video has received 31.3 million views and 1.2 million likes.
