“the last great American dynasty” was written by Aaron Dessner and Taylor Swift, with Dessner producing the song. In 2013, Swift bought a Rhode Island mansion that was once owned by Harkness, and is known as the “Holiday House”. Throughout the song, Swift draws comparisons between her and Harkness, as well as telling listeners about Harkness and her legacy.
The official lyric video for the track was uploaded Swift’s YouTube channel on the 24th July 2020 and shows shots of Rhode Island while the lyrics appear on the screen. As of the beginning of October 2020, the video has 9.9 million views and 230 thousand likes.
