“Sympathy is a knife” is the third track from Charli xcx’s critcally acclaimed 2024 album “BRAT”, which was released in June 2024 through Atlantic Records.

“Sympathy is a knife” is a hyperpop track that sees Charli xcx explore themes of public pressure, self-esteem and how false sympathy from others feels like a knife. The song focuses on image and the lengths women in the public eye feel they have to go to in order to preserve it.

In a remix of the song that was released in October 2024 on a BRAT remix album, Ariana Grande features on the track. In Grande’s verse, she tackles public scrutiny on her body, jealousy and growing as a person.
