“Apple” is the eleventh track from English singer-songwriter Charli xcx and her hit album “BRAT”, which was released in June 2024 through Atlantic Records.
The electropop song is a commentary on intergenerational trauma that gets passed down through each family member, with the apple personifying an individual struggling to deal with said generational trauma. The “apple” is also supposed to represent Charli xcx’s parents, where her relationship with them feels one sided and not equal, with Charli xcx at the end of each verse wishing she could just drive to thew airport to get away.
Speaking to user marg.mp3 in a video, Charli xcx spoke about “Apple” and its significance to her:
“I think [the most underrated track on BRAT is] “Apple”. I had a lot of people reach out to me about “Apple”, which is cool. Obviously, that track is a little bit sonically different than the rest of the songs on the record and, at first, I was nervous about that. But then it kind of felt, actually, that that is sort of the epitome of brat in a way: to kind of throw something unbelievably unexpected just right in your face and, you know, let it thrive…”
The song went viral on TikTok alongside a dance for the second verse of the song, leading many users online to praise the song’s witty lyrics and clever use of metaphors.
