‘Story of my life’ is about someone who is giving everything into a relationship and he continues to try and keep pushing forward to make her happy. The Lines in the chorus seem to be someone who keeps being there for someone because of how much the love them but they know that after it all it will just go back to something he doesn’t want. He really wants things happen again and he understands what he is doing to himself chasing somebody who just will not be there. It’s about love and offers family and home (where we grown) as one of the best places to find the real love. According to Zayn, he said that he thinks the message of the song is to remember all of the details in your life that make up the story of your life. He said it’s about remembering the people and relationships that you had that make you who you are today. In an interview with MTV News, co-writer Jamie Scott explained the quintet have the talent to pull it off, he said: “It’s not that hard a thing to do because the boys have really good voices, they’ve all got very different voices. Harry rasp is something that you can always lean towards, all the boys have such a great sound themselves. For instance the demo that we played the boys sounds a lot more folky than it does now. That’s what amazing about their voices straight away it sounds like them.”
Jamie Scott also said in another interview with UK newspaper The Guardian that this is the song he is most proud of writing and the reason is: “Because we changed the game for them. In the history of all boy bands, they are usually on the way down [by the third album]. With that song I feel like we lifted them to another level.” Niall Horan talked about the first time Scott played the song for them in an interview with UK radio station Capital FM, he said: “We were in Nottingham on tour when we were touring the UK back in February and March and we just came into a room one day and he was like, ‘I’ve got this song that I’ve written and I want to play you.’ And we just fell in love with it the second we heard it.”
