This happy song is about partying, getting crazy, and hooking up. Now the boy band are at an age that they know what fun is to them, and “Midnight Memories” is clearly having fun and state that people can be critical of them, but just letting it roll off their backs so they could have so much fun.
In an interview with Seacrest during a pre-release Q&A, Liam said that ‘Midnight Memories is the most significant part of album, he said: “This was the first song we wrote on the new album and it set us on course of what writing the rest of this album was going to be. It set the tone.”
In an interview with MTV News, co-writer Julian Bunetta explained that this song personifies the five guys’ lifestyle, he said: “It’s the title of the album and it just happens to fall in line with Up All Night, Take Me Home. It’s all references to in the evening. And midnight memories are where most of the memories of this record were made. It was between midnight and 5 in the morning. We have so many memories of just being in the studio or being after a show or being in the back of the bus or going to one of the guys’ places and hanging and writing. Or, it’s also just when you’re young and that’s when you kind of have all your experiences.” In 2013 allegations that Def Leppard had asked their lawyers to look into the similarities between ‘Midnight Memories’ and ‘Pour Some Sugar on Me’ In an interview with Billboard Magazine, guitarists Phill Collen and Vivian Campbell that they are not pursuing any legal action against the boy band, Campbell said: “The chords are one-four-five. Those are the blues. You don’t get more basic than that. I think what’s more reminiscent of the Leppard thing is the production, the sound, the vocals, the reverb and the way it’s assembled”
