“sad day” is the third track from British singer, songwriter and performer FKA twigs’ 2019 album, MAGDALENE. Written by FKA twigs, Lewis Roberts, Benny Blanco, Magnus Høiberg, Nicholas Jaar, Skrillex and Goldstein, with production also done by all of the above. “sad day” was released on the 4th November 2019 through Young Turks Recordings.
“sad day” is a slow art-pop track about wishing for a lover to return to you. Speaking to Apple Music, FKA twigs spoke about the meaning behind the track: “It’s like, ‘Will you take another chance with me? Can we escape the mundane? Can we escape the cyclical motion of life and be in love together and try something that’s dangerous and exhilarating? Yeah, I know I’ve made you sad before, but will you give me another chance?‘ I wrote this song with benny blanco and Koreless. I love to set myself challenges, and it was really exciting to me, the challenge of retaining my sound while working with a really broad group of people. I was lucky working with Benny, in the fact that he creates an environment where, as an artist, you feel really comfortable to be yourself. To me, that’s almost the old-school definition of a producer: They don’t have to be all up in your grill, telling you what to do. They just need to lay a really beautiful, fertile soil, so that you can grow to be the best you in the moment.”
There is currently only an audio video on FKA twigs YouTube channel that has 1.1 million views with 26 thousand likes. The music video is due to be directed by Hiro Murai, an Emmy-nominated director who has previously directed Childish Gambino’s “This is America” music video, which broke records when it was released in May 2018. “sad day” has 6.7 million global streams on Spotify.
