holy terrain (feat. Future)

“holy terrain” is the fourth track from British musician, writer and performer FKA twigs and her 2019 album, “MAGDALENE”. The track features American rapper Future, and this track marks the pair’s first collaboration together.

Written by FKA twigs, Future and many other well-known producers and artists such as Skrillex and Jack Antonoff (who produced and co-wrote many of Lana Del Rey’s songs from her last album, “NFR!”), “holy terrain” is a song about FKA twigs searching for a man who will treat her right, and a man who can be himself no matter what. Future’s role in the track acts as a potential lover, who is attempting to heal himself and his struggles in order to be worthy of FKA twigs’ love. In an interview with British magazine i-D in September 2019, just before the release of “MAGDALENE”, FKA twigs spoke about collaborating with Future and the process: “I wasn’t sure whether Future would even know who I am. I was like, ‘Hi, it’s Twigs. Let me know if you wanna talk about music or anything’. He texted back right away and I was like… ‘Oh my god, he’s just messaged me back!’ He’s such a sweetheart. I sent him the album and I called him up and was like, ‘Listen, Future… this is what my album’s about. It’s a really empowering, sensitive record, with a lot of feminine energy, and this song is probably the most fun track on it, but I still need lyrical content’. And he said, ‘Okay, I’ve got it’. And his verse is beautiful”, she says. “He’s just talking about his downfalls as a man; how he’s sorry and asking for healing. I love sad Future. I love when he gets emo, when he expresses himself. It’s just so beautiful when he opens up.”

The music video for “holy terrain” was uploaded to FKA twigs’ YouTube channel on the 9th September 2019, and was directed by twigs as well as Nick Walker. The video features FKA twigs dancing in a dry desert, wearing coloured contacts and various costumes, from underwear to long dresses. A lot of the camera direction is also focused on twigs singing to the viewer directly into the camera, while desolate and dark skies form overhead. The video has over 2.8 million views with almost 100 thousand likes.
